Cinnamon is a spice that is made from the inner bark of trees scientifically known as Cinnamomum.

It has been used as an ingredient throughout history, dating back as far as Ancient Egypt. It used to be rare and valuable and was regarded as a gift fit for kings.

There are two main types of cinnamon:

Ceylon and Cassia. The majority of the cinnamon you’ll find at the grocery store is Cassia. Ceylon grows primarily in Sri Lanka and isn’t as common.

Cinnamon is made by cutting the stems of cinnamon trees. The inner bark is then extracted and the woody parts removed.

When it dries, it forms strips that curl into rolls, called cinnamon sticks. These sticks can be ground to form cinnamon powder.

The distinct smell and flavor of cinnamon are due to the oily part, which is very high in the compound cinnamaldehyde.

Scientists believe that this compound is responsible for most of cinnamon’s powerful effects on health and metabolism.

Cinnamon’s medicinal purposes date back to ancient times. In the past, it was used to help treat a number of medical conditions, including:

  • respiratory illness
  • gynecological issues
  • digestive problems

In more recent decades, it has shown promise as an anti-inflammatory and to help with improving cognitive function.

Still, there hasn’t been enough scientific research done at this point to determine how much cinnamon is needed to help various conditions.

Cinnamon has been used medicinally for thousands of years and is known for its health benefits.

Studies have shown that cinnamon does have an effect on blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes.

 Cinnamon for Skin

The antibacterial properties of the spice help eliminate the bacteria that cause acne. All you need to do is use a simple cinnamon face mask ( Cinnamon and Honey). Whip the mixture into a thick paste and apply to your face. While the cinnamon fights the harmful bacteria, the honey reduces the redness and restores your skin’s moisture.

Cinnamon improves blood flow to the surface of the skin, resulting in a moist skin. For this, use a mixture of 3 drops of cinnamon essential oil and a few tablespoons of petroleum jelly or olive oil. Keep the mixture away from the eye to avoid a burning sensation.
This mixture could be a great substitute to your lip gloss. You can also apply any regular lip gloss on your lips and gently pat a pinch of cinnamon on top.

Cinnamon helps remove dead skin cells and reinstate the softness of your skin. To fight against dry skin, you can make a scrub by combining salt, olive oil, almond oil, honey and ground cinnamon. Apply this mixture directly to your skin for a soothing home skin therapy.

Complexion Enhancer:  cinnamon helps in enhancing skin complexion. Mix the ingredients: Banana, ground cinnamon, yogurt and lemon juice, and pound it to an even paste. Apply on your face and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.

Treatment of Eczema: Eczema is a condition in which skin gets inflamed and irritated. Such skin conditions leave behind light-colored patches. Cinnamon could provide relief from eczema. Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon with one teaspoon of honey and apply on the affected areas. The results could be visible in a week.

Heals Acne: The anti-fungal, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties of cinnamon makes it useful against acne and skin blemishes. Cinnamon can also help remove acne by drying out the skin and by supporting blood flow to the skin.

Mix honey with cinnamon powder in the ratio of 3:1 and apply the paste to your skin and leave overnight. You can also apply a thin layer of the paste to your face as a face mask and leave on for 20 minutes, then wash it off.

NB : This should be done only once in a week to avoid irritation.
